Tender Love for the Blessed Mother

“Ecce mater tua!”(Jn.19:27).These were the words that our Blessed Lord uttered when he was hanging dying on the cross. He entrusted his beloved Mother to us to mother us that by her guidance we may faithfully follow Her Son. Our Blessed Lord wanted us to love His mother and to give ourselves totally to Her so that through Her Immaculate hands we may be properly disposed to the will of God.

The strong devotion to Mary is one of the Saint’s common characteristics. “In Mary there is never enough” as what St. Bernard said, and all the saints did everything to glorify the Mother of God. St. Pedro was not last in the list because together with Blessed Diego and some other companion renamed the Ladrones Island into Marianas Island showing their deep devotion to the Mother of God. To show the tangible proof for this tender devotion, they built the first church was dedicated on February 2, 1668 on the Feast of Our Lady of the Candles and named it under the title “Dulce Nombre de Maria” (Sweet Name of Mary).

“Thanks to St. Louis de Monfort, I came to understand that true devotion to the Mother of God is actually Christocentric”, Blessed John Paul II proclaimed in 1994. This clearly showed that the Blessed Mother was influential in the lives of the saints— especially to those loved Her the most. The maternal influence of the Immaculate in the life of St. Pedro brought him to give his life for love. The Blessed Mother always encouraged her clients to be charitable at all times and to give generously in times of tribulations, pains and contrarieties, and to support the necessities of others which She herself illustrated at the wedding of Cana (Jn 2:1). Indeed, that Mary was powerful before God and that no request She plead before the Throne of the Most High was rejected.

Dios te salve, Maria! Llena eres de gracia…” as St. Pedro often said as he prayed the most Holy Rosary at the early dawn led by Blessed Diego and together with his confreres. The Most Holy Name of Mary, as sweet as honey, was St. Pedro’s great protection against the snares of the enemy and the allurement of the world, His shield in preserving his purity. Devotion to Her is a clear sign of obtaining heaven. Remember, “Men do not fear a powerful hostile army as the powers of hell fear the name and protection of Mary”, St. Bonaventure said.

Mary is our hope, our sweetness and our life.

Ave Maria!
